The Brihadaranyaka Upanishad is the 10th Primary Upanishad, and a key scripture of the Vedanta philosophy of Hinduism. The Brihadaranyaka Upanishad is one of the oldest Upanishads, estimated to have been created around 900 BCE. Sage Yagnavalkya is said to have been the primary writer of this Shruti. Brihadaranyaka means “Great Forest”. It is indeed a great forest of knowledge – of metaphysical, ethical and philosophical discussions, and concepts explained in profound depth and detail. Especially, its theory on Advaita – the non-duality of Atman (Self) and Brahman (The Absolute) has been greatly discussed through various treatises by great ancient philosphers and teachers such as Adi Shankaracharya. This Upanishad is the origin of one of the Four Mahavakyas – Great Sayings of the Upanishads. "Aham brahmasmi iti" – I myself am Brahman! This is indeed considered the climax – the highest peak of the Vedanta philosophy. What could be greater than the oneness of man and his supposed God!Continue your journey into the world of Upanishads with the Upanishad that has captured all the wisdom of the Vedas in one sentence! This is a journey of self-realization from which there is no turning back!
