All Upanishads expound secret and invisible laws of operation of life energy in the universe. Each takes a single phenomenon and gives it special emphasis and elaboration. There is one Upanishad which packs a lot of principles of operation under one cover and which propounds operations of the universal life energy, its appearance and results, in a very generalised way, but so ingeniously condensed that all that one has to do is to apply that law for a particular formation to know the effect of the law for a particular form. It is more like the Einstein's general theory of relativity or the Maxwell's equation of Electro-magnetic fields or the theory of Quantum Mechanics, which form the basic touch-stone for the validity of all other laws and their derivations. Such a generalised theory of operating principles of life is compiled as Upanishad of a special nature, unmatched in beauty, ingenuity and conciseness. This Upanishad is called "Taittiriya Upanishad".India is the only country which can bring about this convergence between science and philosophy, because we alone of all the nations of the world have the philosophical background and also the scientific temper. In Taittiriya Upanishad, the wise people of a bygone era tried to preserve the knowledge they discovered about the laws of life, for the benefit of posterity and coming generations. Taittiriya Upanishad deals in the scientific side of creation and scrupulously avoids psychological or emotional side of 'Being'. It does touch upon the manifestations of mental and intellectual realms. This is only in the spirit of enquiry into the basis of their existence as such realms and how these operate in their own realms. This Upanishad can be termed as "science of universal physics, chemistry, biology", rolled into one. All these laws have common seed, a common mode of functioning, a common energy source and a common pattern of growth. They are only different in their appearance.It is hoped that the scientific community will go deep with what the Upanishads have said about the origin and existence of the universe.The present work on the Taittiriya Upanishad by Shri H. N. Ramaswamy is a study probing into the depths of the universal principles and truths contained in the text, in the light of the modern scientific knowledge. Modern man wants the proof of repeated experimentation to make him accept the findings of scientific research; likewise the wisdom of the Rishis also needs such an experimentation for their acceptability.This study of the Taittiriya Upanishad will prove that such an experimental approach to the wisdom of our Rishis is possible, and I hope the book will be found to be of interest to all those readers who have imbibed a scientific outlook and would like to have a new interpretation of our ancient literature.
